The rally focused on human rights issues in Xinjiang, the increasingly restrictive political environment in Hong Kong, the cases involving the Hong Kong Alliance, and the situation facing Joshua Wong and other Hong Kong pro-democracy figures. Participants called on the international community to continue paying attention to human rights conditions in Xinjiang and the fundamental rights of people living in the region. The rally also highlighted concerns over the erosion of civil liberties and political rights in Hong Kong, expressed solidarity with pro-democracy activists, and called for the release of Joshua Wong and others who have faced imprisonment or political repression because of their involvement in democratic and political activities.

During the event, CDPA Chairman Xiquan Qin, Publicity Minister Yichen Ji, Organisation Minister Yongjiu Ni and Jarry delivered speeches. Publicity Minister Yichen Ji periodically led participants in chanting slogans including “Overthrow CCP tyranny” and “Down with dictator Xi Jinping,” drawing an enthusiastic response and creating an impassioned atmosphere. The speakers addressed China’s current political environment, human rights conditions and the social and political consequences of long-term one-party rule from different perspectives. They expressed their opposition to CCP authoritarian rule, called for an end to political repression and personal dictatorship, and called for Xi Jinping to step down. The speakers also expressed their hope for a future China in which civil rights, freedom of expression, democratic elections and the rule of law are genuinely respected.

In speeches and campaign materials relating to Xinjiang, participants stressed that human rights should not be treated differently on the basis of ethnicity, religion, political views or geographical location. They called for continued international attention to concerns surrounding fundamental freedoms and human rights protections in the region. Participants said that publicly discussing these issues in a democratic society gives ordinary people an opportunity to learn more about them and helps encourage continued international attention to groups facing political repression or violations of their rights.

Hong Kong was another major focus of the rally. Participants highlighted the cases involving the Hong Kong Alliance and the circumstances facing people associated with Hong Kong’s democracy movement. Through speeches, protest signs and flyers, they sought to explain these issues to members of the public. The rally repeatedly called for the release of Joshua Wong and other imprisoned pro-democracy figures and argued that freedoms of expression, assembly and political participation should not continue to be restricted for political reasons. Participants said that their concern for Hong Kong was not limited to one individual or one court case, but involved the broader question of whether people are able to express political opinions freely.

In addition to the speeches, members distributed flyers to people passing through the Town Hall area. As central Sydney was busy that day, the event attracted the attention of local residents and visitors from different countries. Some stopped to listen to the speeches, while others accepted information materials and spoke with participants about issues concerning China, Xinjiang and Hong Kong. During the rally, some members of the public applauded and cheered in response to the speeches and slogans, while others expressed their support through words and gestures. A number of passers-by also voiced support for the principles of freedom, democracy and fundamental human rights.

Chairman Xiquan Qin’s daughter also attended the rally and joined other participants in supporting the values of democracy, human rights and freedom. Members of the organisation said that the participation of people from different generations carried particular significance, as the protection of democratic values and fundamental rights is not an issue limited to one age group, region or generation. Instead, it concerns the dignity and future of everyone. Public events such as this also provide an opportunity for younger generations to understand the freedoms available in a democratic society and the importance of protecting those freedoms.

The China Democracy Progressive Alliance stated that in a democratic country such as Australia, expressing political views through peaceful rallies, public speeches, protest signs and the distribution of information is an important part of overseas democratic activism. The organisation hopes that continued public activities will help more Australians and members of the international community understand human rights and political conditions in mainland China, Xinjiang and Hong Kong. It also seeks to speak on behalf of people who are unable to express themselves freely or who face repression or imprisonment because of their political views. The Sydney Town Hall event was therefore not only a protest, but also a public campaign to raise awareness of human rights and democracy.

Organisers said that the China Democracy Progressive Alliance would continue to conduct peaceful and public activities in accordance with Australian law, while maintaining its focus on human rights in Xinjiang, Hong Kong pro-democracy figures and political freedoms in mainland China. Through rallies, speeches, information campaigns and direct engagement with the public, the organisation intends to bring these issues to a wider audience. The CDPA also stated that it would continue to oppose authoritarian rule and political repression, speak for those facing persecution, and promote greater international awareness and support for the principles of freedom, democracy, human rights and the rule of law.
