27 September: CDPA Representative Attends Sydney “National Day of Mourning” Rally; Publicity Minister Yichen Ji Joins the Commemoration and Voices Democratic Aspirations

On 27 September 2026, a number of democracy, human rights and religious groups in Australia held a “National Day of Mourning” rally outside Sydney Town Hall. The gathering commemorated victims of successive political campaigns and persecution since the Chinese Communist Party came to power and called for an end to authoritarian rule and for China to move towards democracy, freedom, human rights and the rule of law. Yichen Ji, a representative and Publicity Minister of the China Democracy Progressive Alliance, attended the event and joined people from different organisations in expressing concern about human rights and China’s political system.

At the beginning of the event, participants observed a minute of silence for those who lost their lives during political campaigns and persecution under CCP rule. Representatives from democracy organisations, Tibetan groups, Falun Gong groups and other human rights organisations then spoke about one-party rule, religious freedom, freedom of expression, ethnic culture and the CCP’s influence overseas.

Ji attended the rally as a representative of the China Democracy Progressive Alliance. He said that, for him, the “National Day of Mourning” was not directed against the Chinese people, nor was it a rejection of China itself. Rather, it was an occasion to re-examine the cost that China’s political system has imposed on ordinary people since 1949.

Ji believes that what makes a country truly worthy of celebration should not be limited to military power, economic scale or political slogans. It should be whether its people possess dignity, freedom and the right to choose their government. If a society lacks genuinely competitive political choices, strictly controls the press and the internet, and subjects peaceful dissenters to pressure because of their views, then claims of national “strength” cannot substitute for protecting the people’s fundamental rights.

He also said that the Chinese Communist Party is not synonymous with China and that the Chinese people should not be permanently bound to any political party. Genuine patriotism, he argued, should include concern for whether people can speak, worship and associate freely, and whether they can participate peacefully in deciding their country’s future.

Several speakers expressed similar views. Zhang Xiaogang, a member of the Federation for a Democratic China, criticised the CCP’s longstanding use of political propaganda to sustain one-party rule. Zhu Zhaokun of the China Democracy Unity Alliance said he hoped the next generation could live in a free China. Democracy activist Fu Shengli stressed that voices long subjected to suppression should be able to speak openly.

Representatives of Falun Gong groups also spoke about freedom of belief, while Tibetan participants discussed language, religion, cultural identity and the Law on Promoting Ethnic Unity and Progress. Although participants came from different backgrounds, the shared themes of the rally were opposition to political repression, protection of fundamental human rights and support for a freer and more open political future for China.

Ji said that the CDPA participated in the event in the hope of maintaining open communication with different democracy and human rights groups. Organisations may differ in their views and approaches, he said, but they can seek common ground on fundamental issues including opposition to political persecution and support for freedom of expression, freedom of belief, human rights and the rule of law.

He added that the ability of overseas Chinese to gather openly on the streets of Sydney, criticise governments and express political opinions is itself an important right afforded to ordinary people in a democratic society. Precisely because they have experienced this freedom, he said, they should pay greater attention to those in mainland China who cannot openly express similar views.

“Remembering the past is not about remaining forever in hatred, but about preventing the tragedies of history from being repeated,” Ji said. “A China with genuine hope should not fear different voices, nor should it depend on fear and censorship to maintain stability. China should ultimately belong to every Chinese person, not to any political party.”

The China Democracy Progressive Alliance stated that it would continue to focus on democracy, human rights, freedom of expression, freedom of religion and belief, and the CCP’s influence overseas, while expressing its positions through peaceful assemblies, public advocacy and community engagement.

The Sydney “National Day of Mourning” rally again demonstrated that democracy, human rights, religious and ethnic groups from diverse backgrounds in Australia continue to speak out on China’s political and human rights issues. For the CDPA, taking part was not only an act of public political expression, but also an opportunity to engage with other overseas democratic forces and jointly focus attention on China’s future.
