On the afternoon of 31 October 2026, the Sydney, Australia, action of the global silent stand in solidarity with Joshua Wong was held. The event was organised by the NSW Freedom Friends and Hong Kong–Macau Alliance. For the China Democracy Progressive Alliance, Publicity Minister Yichen Ji handled liaison work and worked with Organisation Minister Yongjiu Ni to coordinate and organise members’ participation.
Through their coordination, six CDPA members attended: Chairman Xiquan Qin, Publicity Minister Yichen Ji, and members Congxia Yang, Zhongfa Sun, Hui Lin and Zongjun Liu. Organisation Minister Yongjiu Ni had planned to attend but was unable to do so because of an urgent matter that arose that day.
Among the CDPA members present, Publicity Minister Yichen Ji was the only person who delivered an on-site speech on behalf of the organisation. The other members expressed their concern by taking part in the silent stand, group singing and other acts of solidarity.

Before the event began, participants chanted together: “Liberate Hong Kong! Revolution of Our Times!”
Participants then sang “Glory to Hong Kong”. After the song, the silent stand began. Holding signs in support of Joshua Wong and Hong Kong’s freedoms, participants expressed their position in a quiet and solemn manner.

During the silent stand, some participants shed tears over Joshua Wong’s circumstances and the changes Hong Kong has undergone in recent years. There was no constant noise, yet the silence itself became one of the day’s most moving forms of expression.

Yichen Ji Speaks on Behalf of the CDPA
That day, CDPA Publicity Minister Yichen Ji was the organisation’s only member to speak on site and delivered remarks on behalf of the China Democracy Progressive Alliance.
In his speech, Ji reviewed Joshua Wong’s involvement in Hong Kong’s democracy movement from his teenage years. He referred to the 2012 campaign against national education, the 2014 Umbrella Movement and the 2019 anti-extradition movement, through which Wong became one of the most widely recognised young figures in Hong Kong’s democracy movement.
Ji said that Joshua Wong had now reached his thirtieth birthday, an age that should be among the most energetic years of a person’s life, yet he remained imprisoned.
Ji said: “He could have made many different choices. With his international profile, English ability and overseas experience, he could have left Hong Kong and started again somewhere else. But he did not. He left the most precious years of his youth on Hong Kong’s streets, in its courts and in its prisons.”
Ji then discussed Hong Kong’s political changes in recent years. He said that the CCP had once promised “one country, two systems”, a high degree of autonomy, and that Hong Kong’s previous systems and way of life would remain unchanged for fifty years. In his view, however, Hong Kong’s political, educational, media and judicial environments have changed dramatically.
He asked: “How much space is left in Hong Kong for genuinely opposing voices?” He continued: “If so-called stability requires the silence of more and more people as its price, what does that stability really mean?”
Ji argued that a genuinely open and free society should allow different political views to exist and permit ordinary people to criticise the government openly, without fearing the loss of their freedom for peacefully expressing political ideas.
Speaking about the 2019 Hong Kong protests, he again referred to the phrase “Liberate Hong Kong, Revolution of Our Times.” He said that however people evaluate the slogan, it has become an important part of the memory of that period in Hong Kong’s political history.
At the end of his speech, Ji led the calls: “Free Joshua Wong!” “Defend Hong Kong’s freedom!” “Liberate Hong Kong!” “Revolution of Our Times!” “Overthrow CCP tyranny!” and “Down with dictator Xi Jinping!”

CDPA: The Hong Kong We Once Knew Is Fading Away
The CDPA stated that changes in Hong Kong’s political and social environment in recent years remain an important focus for the organisation. Hong Kong was once known for a comparatively open media environment, an active civil society, substantial space for political expression and a strong rule-of-law tradition. In recent years, however, these spaces have been shrinking rapidly.
The CDPA believes that the Hong Kong that was once open, diverse and able to discuss politics and criticise the government publicly is gradually fading away.
In Hong Kong today, a growing range of political activity is placed within a national-security framework. The operating space for pro-democracy parties and civil organisations has visibly narrowed, the media faces greater political pressure, and ordinary people have become more cautious when discussing sensitive political issues.
Of even greater concern is the judicial independence in which Hong Kong once took pride. In the CDPA’s view, as the political environment tightens, the national-security system expands, and space for political expression, media scrutiny and civil organisations remains restricted, Hong Kong’s rule of law and judicial independence face increasing pressure.
When the media finds it increasingly difficult to scrutinise power, when opposition groups struggle to exist normally, when ordinary people must consider legal consequences before making a political remark, and when judicial independence is increasingly affected by the political environment, Hong Kong’s most precious freedoms and rule of law are being eroded piece by piece.
At the same time, Hong Kong’s education system has placed growing emphasis on national security and patriotic content. The CDPA expressed concern and stated that education should not become a tool of political indoctrination. Young people should have space to think independently, encounter different viewpoints and discuss public affairs freely.
The CDPA stated that it would continue to follow freedom of expression, press freedom, freedom of association, judicial independence and political rights in Hong Kong. It would also continue to pay attention to Joshua Wong and others facing legal proceedings or imprisonment because of political activity and expression. The Hong Kong that once existed should not survive only in memory.

Congxia Yang Attends Despite Illness: Young People Should Speak More
The presence of CDPA member Congxia Yang was deeply moving to the members who attended alongside her.
Yang is currently living with a tumour and is due to undergo surgery soon. Despite experiencing significant pain, she insisted on attending the silent stand in person to support Joshua Wong.

During the event, Ji asked her: “Why don’t you go up and speak?” Yang replied: “I am old. Young people should have more opportunities to speak.”
Although she did not take the stage, she remained for the entire event. To the members with her, not giving a speech did not mean her voice was absent. For a person in pain and approaching surgery to attend a peaceful solidarity action in person was itself a powerful form of expression. Her actions also encouraged younger members present to keep paying attention to Hong Kong and to keep speaking out.
During the event, CDPA members wore white T-shirts bearing handwritten messages in support of Joshua Wong and Hong Kong’s freedoms, expressing their support for the action in a visible and direct way.

In Silence, Joshua Wong Is Not Forgotten
The silent stand did not feature lengthy speeches. For most of the time, people simply stood quietly. Some looked at signs supporting Joshua Wong, some lowered their heads in silence, and some shed tears.
For those who attended, the event was not only about Joshua Wong’s individual fate. They were concerned about whether Hong Kong can still accommodate different political voices, whether the media can still scrutinise public power, whether the judiciary can remain independent, and whether ordinary people can express political views without fear.
Ji said: “Today, our concern for Joshua Wong is not only about one person’s fate. We are asking whether Hong Kong can still accommodate different voices, whether ordinary people can still say ‘no’ openly, and whether young people can participate in politics without losing their freedom.”
On the afternoon of 31 October 2026 in Sydney, participants completed this solidarity action through song, slogans, a speech and silence. Some spoke, some cried, and some simply stood quietly.
Their message was: Joshua Wong has not been forgotten. Hong Kong has not been forgotten. The Hong Kong that once existed should not become only history. The voice of freedom should not disappear because of imprisonment.
