At 3:00 p.m. on June 14, 2026, two members of the China Democracy Progressive Alliance, YICHEN JI and Ni Yongjiu, attended the event “Commemorating the 7th Anniversary of the Hong Kong Anti-Extradition Movement — Umbrellas Never Fall, We Walk Together” outside the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in Sydney. The event was jointly initiated by Sydney Hong Kong community organizations, including Australia-Hong Kong Link and NSW Hongkongers. Participants gathered, spoke, displayed banners, and chanted slogans to protest the continued suppression of Hong Kong’s freedom, human rights, and rule of law by the Chinese Communist Party and Hong Kong authorities, while calling on Australian society to pay attention to Hong Kong and to close the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in Sydney.

Seven years ago, the people of Hong Kong took to the streets to oppose the proposed amendments to the Extradition Bill. That movement was not merely a protest against one piece of legislation, but a collective defense by a generation of Hong Kong people of freedom, the rule of law, press freedom, judicial independence, and civic dignity. Countless Hong Kong citizens expressed their demands peacefully in the streets, while young people, students, professionals, grassroots citizens, and ordinary families participated in different ways. Holding umbrellas high, they faced tear gas, rubber bullets, arrests, and political pressure, yet continued to speak out and showed the world the resilience and courage of Hong Kong people.
“Umbrellas Never Fall, We Walk Together” is not only a commemoration of a past movement, but also an indictment of Hong Kong’s current situation. Seven years later, Hong Kong is no longer the city where people could freely speak, publish, and assemble. Once-vibrant street protests have been suppressed, independent media outlets have been shut down, pro-democracy figures have been arrested, civil society groups have been forced to dissolve, and many Hong Kong people have gone into exile. Many who remain in Hong Kong are forced to stay silent in fear.
At the event, participants reviewed the dramatic changes in Hong Kong society since the anti-extradition movement. They pointed out that the Chinese Communist Party has destroyed the promise of “one country, two systems” through the Hong Kong National Security Law and a series of political trials. The rule of law, freedom, and openness that Hong Kong once took pride in are being steadily dismantled under Beijing’s high-pressure rule.
Participants specifically mentioned the political persecution suffered by Hong Kong democracy advocates and journalists, including Jimmy Lai. As the founder of Apple Daily, Lai long supported democracy and press freedom in Hong Kong, yet he has faced severe punishment under national security charges. This is not only the suppression of one individual, but also a heavy blow to Hong Kong’s press freedom, freedom of expression, and civil society.
CDPA members YICHEN JI and Ni Yongjiu stated that the spirit of Hong Kong’s resistance should not be forgotten. Seven years ago, Hong Kong people told the world through action that freedom is not just a slogan, rights are not gifts, and people have the right to stand up for their dignity in the face of authoritarian rule. Today, although space for speaking out inside Hong Kong has been severely restricted, overseas Hong Kongers, overseas Chinese, and all who support freedom and democracy should continue the relay and bring Hong Kong’s voice to Australia and the international community.
At the event, participants chanted slogans including: “Liberate Hong Kong, revolution of our times!” “Release political prisoners!” “Stop political persecution!” “Close the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in Sydney!” “Overthrow the tyranny of the Chinese Communist Party!” and “Restore Hong Kong’s freedom and prosperity!”
The event also called on the Australian government and society to re-examine the role of Hong Kong’s overseas economic and trade offices. Participants argued that, as Hong Kong’s freedom and autonomy have been seriously undermined by the CCP, Hong Kong’s overseas offices are no longer merely ordinary trade representation bodies, but may have become part of Beijing’s external propaganda, political influence, and suppression of overseas Hong Kong voices.
The China Democracy Progressive Alliance believes that the Hong Kong issue is not merely a regional issue, but a reflection of the CCP’s authoritarian system expanding outward and suppressing the values of the free world. Today’s Hong Kong is a warning for China’s future and a reality that global democratic societies must confront.
The China Democracy Progressive Alliance will continue to stand with the Hong Kong democracy movement and support Hong Kong political prisoners, prisoners of conscience, and all those persecuted for pursuing freedom. Hong Kong will not be forgotten. Freedom will not be extinguished. Tyranny will eventually end. The people will regain their dignity.
