At 3:30 p.m. on May 17, 2026, the China Democracy Progressive Alliance held a peaceful rally in Eastwood, Sydney, Australia. With the main theme of opposing Xi Jinping’s dictatorship and ending one-party rule, the rally called on the international community to continue paying attention to China’s human rights situation and urged the Chinese authorities to immediately release Jimmy Lai, Peng Lifa, and others who have been suppressed for expressing political views and defending civil rights.
On the streets of Eastwood that day, participants expressed their demands in a peaceful, rational, and determined manner. Holding signs and chanting slogans, they delivered a clear message to passersby: the Chinese people should have freedom of speech, freedom of the press, freedom of belief, and the right to choose their political system. Participants pointed out that China’s one-party authoritarian system has long suppressed dissenting voices and restricted the development of civil society, forcing many who pursue democracy, freedom, and the rule of law to pay a heavy price.
During the rally, many passersby stopped to watch and took out their phones to photograph and record the scene. Many members of the public expressed support for the rally and said the Chinese authorities should release Jimmy Lai and others who have suffered political persecution as soon as possible, so that they may regain their freedom.
Among them, a Chinese woman who had immigrated to Australia more than 40 years ago repeatedly applauded the participants in support. She also told participants about her personal experiences during the Cultural Revolution. She said that she had personally witnessed the pain and disaster that totalitarian politics brought to ordinary people, and therefore had a deep understanding of the Chinese Communist Party’s rule. She said that the Communist Party is the most evil political party in the world and hoped that more Chinese people would gain a clear and truthful understanding of it. She believed that only by defeating the Communist Party could China truly have a future.
The woman also encouraged participants to continue holding similar events and urged them to strengthen their outreach so that more people could understand the reality under Chinese Communist Party rule. She said that many people have long been deceived by CCP propaganda, and that more people need to stand up to expose the truth, spread information, and awaken public awareness. Her support and encouragement deeply moved the participants and strengthened their determination to continue speaking out, supporting prisoners of conscience, and promoting democracy and freedom for China.
Her remarks touched many people at the scene. Her experience was not only a personal memory, but also a reflection of the suffering endured by countless Chinese people under totalitarian rule. From the Cultural Revolution to the present day, Chinese society has still not truly escaped political fear, ideological control, and the worship of power. Participants said that history must not be forgotten and suffering must not be covered up. It is precisely because some people are willing to stand up and tell the truth that more people have the opportunity to see the essence of dictatorship.
As one of the representative figures of Hong Kong’s press freedom and democratic movement, Jimmy Lai’s situation has continued to draw attention from overseas Chinese communities and the international community. Participants argued that the suppression of Jimmy Lai is not merely an attack on one individual, but also a suppression of Hong Kong’s freedom, rule of law, and spirit of independent journalism. Many people at the scene also said that the Chinese Communist authorities should stop political persecution and release Jimmy Lai as soon as possible.
At the same time, Peng Lifa has become a symbol of civic courage in the hearts of many people because of his brave expression of political demands against dictatorship and personal worship. Participants called on the Chinese authorities to immediately release all prisoners of conscience who have been criminalized for their speech or imprisoned for their beliefs, so that they can regain their freedom and dignity as soon as possible.
The chairman of the China Democracy Progressive Alliance stated at the rally that although overseas Chinese live in free societies, they must not forget those in China who still live under high-pressure rule. A peaceful rally is not only an expression of protest, but also a rejection of silence and fear. The organizers emphasized that opposing dictatorship does not mean opposing the Chinese people. On the contrary, it is precisely because they care about China’s future that they call for a China that respects human rights, protects freedom, and practices the rule of law.
The atmosphere at the rally was solemn and determined. Participants said that democratic transition will not happen overnight, but every public voice, every peaceful protest, and every act of solidarity with victims is part of moving history forward. They hope that through such actions, more Australians will understand China’s human rights issues, and that those who still uphold ideals of freedom inside China will know that they are not alone.
This peaceful rally in Eastwood, Sydney once again demonstrated the overseas Chinese community’s commitment to democracy, freedom, and human rights. No matter what pressure they face, the voice of those pursuing freedom will not disappear. Ending one-party rule, opposing personal dictatorship, and releasing prisoners of conscience are not merely political slogans; they are calls for human dignity, social justice, and hope for the future.
